As many thrift stores and vintage shops there are in Tokyo, this alone did not make up for the metropolis’ reputation for all things thrifting. The Oi racecourse flea market is one of the largest and most popular destinations for residents and visitors alike, bringing nearly 600 vendors at once. From vintage soft vinyl toys to crusty hand creams from a decade ago, you can find it all, only if you’re willing to put in the work.
Held in a large parking complex, vendors are situated between cars, under the shade of the building. Coincidentally, a motorbike training session was held next to the flea market, along with instructors and officials overseeing it.
Under the parking complex, outside under the sun, and next to a motorbike training course, we invited Tokyo-based artists Ore, who is also a regular in the flea market, to show us around. Having such a talent for the day, we took the opportunity to approach some of the most stylish visitors around, and sketch them into one of Ore’s creations.
